What to Expect in Your First Month of Vocal Lessons
Let’s be real—your first few vocal lessons might feel a little chaotic.
Or super fun.
Or strangely soothing.
Or… all of the above.
The truth is, you never really know what to expect—and that’s part of the magic. But one thing’s for sure: it’ll be something new, and it’ll be yours.
✨ If you're already a student at TVS, we'd love to hear about your first month too!

A Sneak Peek: What Happens in Your First Few Weeks @ The Vocal Studio Singapore
Here’s an example of what your first month might look like. Of course, everyone’s journey is a little different—but this gives you a general idea of what to expect.
Week 1: Your Very First Lesson

You walk into the studio, maybe a little nervous—but curious. After a short wait, your vocal coach greets you and invites you in.
The first few minutes are all about introductions. Your coach might ask:
- What brought you to singing?
- Do you have any past singing or music experience?
- Is there a specific goal or dream you’re chasing?
We’ve heard it all—from wanting to overcome stage anxiety, to gearing up for an audition, to finally singing a favorite song with confidence at karaoke.
Warm-up & Vocal Assessment
Next comes the body and voice warm-up. Don’t worry—it’s not a test!
- Gentle stretches and massages
- Breathing exercises
- Lip trills, vocal “hollers,” cheering sounds
- Pitch matching (singing back simple notes or phrases)
- Scale exercises (e.g., 1-2-3-2-1) to explore your vocal range
Everything might feel a bit unfamiliar—and that’s totally okay. You’re not expected to “nail it” right away. Just give it a try and think of it as playtime for your voice.
Singing a Song (Yes, Already!)
You’ll try singing a song you love—anything you’re comfortable with. Don’t worry if you don’t have one in mind; we’ve got a list to help you choose.
After you sing, your coach will give feedback on your tone, strengths, and areas for improvement. They might offer simple exercises—posture tweaks, breath awareness, or pronunciation tips. And yes, it might feel awkward at first. That’s natural.
Tip: If something doesn’t make sense, say so. Every voice—and every brain—learns differently. Your coach is here to help you find what clicks for you.
Homework & Goals
Before you leave, you’ll get some practice tips and maybe a small assignment. You'll also begin to shape your vocal goals—short-term or long-term.
And if you don’t have a goal yet? That’s okay too. Let your coach guide the way until something inspires you. Even simply setting aside weekly time to reconnect with your voice is a beautiful goal.
Week 2: Building the Basics
Now that the ice is broken, your coach may take a more structured approach.
If you’re curious about how the voice actually works, this might be the week where you learn:
- How breath supports your voice
- How sound resonates in your body
- What your vocal folds do (and how to protect them)
Some students love geeking out on vocal anatomy. Others prefer jumping straight into music. Either is okay!
The lesson may be split between technical drills (like breath control or pitch exercises) and applying what you learn to a song.
Week 3–4: Settling Into the Routine
By now, you’ll likely have a rhythm:
- Body warm-ups
- Breathing and vocalizing
- Scale work and technique drills
- Singing and applying skills to your song
You’ll start noticing more about how your voice feels. Just like in yoga or Pilates, the awareness takes time to build. But with each lesson, you’ll begin to understand your voice on a deeper level.
Your coach will keep guiding you—and helping you hear the subtle things you might not catch on your own. That’s the beauty of one-on-one vocal coaching.
Song Practice Tips
You’ll work on:
- Melody
- Breathing points
- Rhythm and timing
- Expression and phrasing
Q: How long does it take to “complete” a song?
A: It depends on your goals and how much you practice. For beginners, expect 4–6 weeks to get familiar with the basics of a song—and maybe 1–2 more to truly make it your own.
Extra Motivation: Performances & Events
Around this time, your coach might also share upcoming events—whether you want to join as an audience member or step up as a performer!
