Q: What will I learn during the REgular Vocal Lessons?

Each Lesson consists of Warm-up - Fundamentals – Song Learning – Cool Down & Review

Warm-up: From the lower abdomen to the chest where air pressure is created, to the vibratory system (voice box) all the way up to the throat, oral and nasal cavities and the face - many more than 50 muscles are engaged in the production of sound or vocals. Therefore, 50 minute singing can be considered equivalent to a full-body exercise. Hence it requires a proper warm-up of the body and the voice.

Fundamentals: In order to hold a note, sing low or high registers, do large jumps or vocal acrobatics, we need the support of our diaphragm and various controlling skills to make it effortless. In vocal lessons, we break down the vocal and singing anatomy into step-by-step exercises to strengthen and sculpt how your voice would sound in time to come.

Song Learning: Our focus on song learning shifts from achieving basic techniques of each genre or the singer to establishing the student’s own singing style. In order to tackle each challenge, coaches utilize physical explanation, description, demonstration and apply the most effective method for each student.

Cool-down & Review: The coach gives exercises for the students to practice until the next class.

Recording and Performing opportunities – Students can join our quarterly performance day and special performing events to be on the stage and show what they have learned in front of the audience. Also, we offer recording sessions as part of our lesson for the students who want to check the progress of their singing and own a vocal track for themselves.

Q: How long does it take for a beginner to improve?

1-3 months: Diaphragm breathing, basic scale, projection, finding your own voice

3-6 months: Applying the scale to songs, advanced scale exercise, rhythm and groove, performance skill

9 months ~: Diverse techniques, complex scale exercise, Song mastering

We recommend at least 6-12 months for lessons to see a marked improvement in your voice. 80% of our students continue for longer than this, with a large percentage of our students taking lessons with us for 2-5 years continuously. Lessons continue for as long as students are improving and enjoying their classes. Lessons are taken weekly. Obviously the longer a student continues vocal training, the more advanced they become. Lessons are tailored to suit the individual needs of the student.

Q: Do you hold Vocal Workshops or Camps?

Currently, we do not hold any Vocal Camps however we do have various Vocal Workshops that might be ongoing depending on the time of the year.

You can stay up to date on our social media: instagram.com/thevocalstudio.sg , facebook.com/TheVocalStudio.sg

Q: Can I train for vocal exams (Trinity, LCM, ABRSM)?

The Vocal Studio can also assist students to prepare for outside examinations including Trinity College of London Pop & Rock Vocal Examinations, or London College of Music, or ABRSM for Grades 1-8.

Under our guidance, we tailor our standard lessons such that the student is adequately prepared for the Exams - but students need to go through the registrations process by themselves.

We would recommend at least 3 months of preparation for each grade, and group lessons are not suitable to prepare for Examination Preparation.

Q: How much are Group Lessons or workshops?

Please contact us for a group workshop or lesson fees. If you are looking to hire any one of our coaches to conduct a personalised workshop at your venue of choice, kindly do email us at admin@thevocalstudio.sg with your enquiry.

Q: Do my lessons have to be weekly (for the package)?

Lesson packages require regular weekly attendance. We recommend weekly lessons for greater improvement and steady progress. If you’d like to have more flexibility, you can sign up for flexi package with longer validity period.

Q: Do you teach Beginners?

Yes, we teach Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced & Professionals.

Q: Do you offer training for speaking voice and public speech, and how does it work?

Yes, we provide voice training for students who want to improve or train their voice for public speech etc. The coach will help you understand your own voice and the current use of your voice, and identify areas for improvement and provide training on breathing, vocal projection, articulation and phrasing.

Q: Do You teach musical instruments too?

We specialise in singing and the voice but the coaches at times use musical instruments (keyboard, guitar, rhythm instrument) to accompany and support your vocal training.

Q: My Child is 4-5 yrs old. Can he/she start the lesson?

We recommend a 30-minute trial lesson with our coaches before deciding on the lesson. Each child responds differently in a lesson setting, also children develop rapidly and their voice conditions change almost every day. This is when they need to have fun exposure and build appreciation and interest in singing and music so the lessons are adapted to be more playful.

Q: Do you teach adult students?

Yes, about 50-60% of our students are adults who love singing and want to improve their voice and singing skills. The lessons are customized to fit the level of each student so it doesn't matter students are a complete beginner or amateur or professional musicians.

Q: Can a tone-deaf problem be fixed?

Most of the time (over 90%), the tone-deafness is train-able! We can help you distinguish different pitches and identify melody patterns through hearing training and visual representation. With time you’ll be able to see yourself hitting the right pitch, and widen your vocal range

Q: What’s your teaching approach? (SLS, CVT, ESTILL, etc.)

We do respect each school of vocal pedagogy and keep ourselves updated with the current studies but do not strictly follow a single style. Below is the teaching approach that our coaches take.

  1. Evidence-based teaching for vocal projection: the coaches are well informed of the anatomy & physical process for singing and breathing thus can train the students to build the fundamental skill for singing. This is a shared understanding across all genres of singing.

  2. Multi-Genre, Multi-Style: Each coach has their expertise in various genres - so along with the basic vocal training the coaches can guide the students to learn diverse styles of music. All the coaches can teach basics and pop music - but if you wish to learn a specific genre you can take lessons from different coaches to gain deeper insights for understanding that music.

  3. Holistic Perspective: We do not see singing only as technical training but the full development of oneself through singing, and the goal is to help students eventually build their own unique way of singing.

  4. Teamwork: Our coaches have regular professional development/ case discussion sessions on their teaching experience to develop better insight and understanding of each student and how to teach better because every single student comes in with different motivation and personality.

Q: Do you hold recitals?

We host performance day every 3 months, each and every year to provide our regular students with an opportunity to perform in front of an audience. Our students range in age from 7 years to seniors, so it is always an entertaining evening! These are a great way to get stage experience and they serve as a goal to work towards. So when your coach believes you are ready, and you would like to perform, we start the process of preparing you!

Q: Is it compulsory to join the performance?

We highly encourage the students to perform to celebrate the progress they have been making through the lesson with the coach. However, we are also very happy to wait until the student feels ready to give it a try and provide a sense of achievement within the class and through regular vocal recording sessions.

Q: Do you offer Home-based lessons?

We normally conduct lessons at the studio, but if the students have difficulties in making a trip to the school we can arrange the home visiting lessons. Please contact us to check the availability.
