How to learn singing on your own [Part 1]

In reality, it's all about self-learning.

It's not to suggest that vocal coaching lacks value (after all, that's our specialty!). Rather, it's to emphasize that vocal coaches and singing teachers act as guides, providing feedback, tools, advice, and exercises. Singers, however, play the crucial role of implementing these insights, observing their effects, and developing methods that suit them best.

If you've actively sought ways to enhance your singing, you've already achieved more than half the game. You will indeed see improvements sooner or later.

BUT, a word of caution ⚠️:

One of the most significant lessons within vocal training is UNLEARNING,

It takes days, weeks, and sometimes months to replace old habits that don't benefit vocal health, voice quality, or overall improvement. It can be a challenging process—perhaps worthwhile, but possibly avoidable if you know what to watch for from the start.

Here's the number one principle: Learn the basics of 'how to sing without straining.'

This principle includes activities like:

Stretches/Warm-ups (5 min)

Setting the right posture (1 min)

Applying proper breath support (5 min)

Training for flexible, optimized use of articulators (tongue twisters, etc.) (2 min)

Building and feeling vocal resonance (rather than vocal force) (5 min)

Consider it a physical exercise routine with repetitions and redundancies. Think of it as paving the road before driving the car. If you pave it well, singing becomes a smooth and exciting journey; otherwise, it might feel bumpy, stuck, and a bit risky.

I've estimated the time for this routine at around 20 minutes. If you're already skilled, the time becomes shorter and more efficient.

This information is readily available through online searches, and the practices are quite simple, aren't they?

If you've never tried singing or are hesitant to join a vocal lesson, know that you're born with the voice to sing. The road to singing is not a complex, magical one. So, don't hesitate or pull away from the opportunity to learn how to sing.

This is the guidance for your step 1, of how to learn singing on your own. See you in our following blog covering the next steps 🤞

Also if you are interested in taking one lesson to receive overall feedback, assessment, and tips on setting the next direction - do not hesitate :) One good lesson can save you many days of trying to navigate the singing journey 🎤
